Hi, my name is Luke and I’m 8 years old.
I’m riding on the back of my Dad’s Burley Tandem across the United States. We are starting at Jacksonville Beach, FL and going to San Diego, CA.
Date: October 11, 2012
On the first day we left Jacksonville Beach. It was cool because it was my birthday. We went out and ate dinner and stayed at a hotel. We thought we could make it to the rails to trails but it had to wait until the second day.
Date: October 12, 2012
The second day, we got up and ate breakfast and hit the road around 11:15. We got to the rails to trails and were on that for about 15 miles. We didn’t see any alligators which I was hoping. And, moccasins I could do without but I was hoping we could still see one. It was cool because we asked if we could set up camp by Station 2 (the paramedics).
Date: October 13, 2012
The next morning we got up, ate, played some frisbee. Mom got up late because she had a migraine and then she got ready and we hit the road. We went to Olustee and I took some pictures of the battleground. We hit the road and then contacted our host for the night and we went to the bike shop he owned and then he picked us up.
I watched Woody Woodpecker while my parents talked to their parents (’cause they have kids ha ha). We went to bed.
Date: October 14, 2012
The next morning we got up and we ate breakfast. And then, I played with the kids while the parents talked more. We took some pictures as you will see on our site, and then we went to Starbucks. And then it started raining and then it stopped. So, we went to Walmart and bought food and went to a host for the night. Pastor Brendan told us some funny jokes and then had to go.

We had breakfast and then hit the road. We road to Greenville, Florida. We met a women on a scooter named Linda Lou, she contacted her Pastor and we stayed at her house until the Pastor could come and meet us.

Luke The Inventor Part 2!
My favorite parts of the trip so far are:
Seeing cool insects on the side of the road and at campgrounds.
Doing 42 miles, and then a couple of days later, doing 53 miles on our bikes.
Meeting cool people.
Pumping tubes up when they get flat and finding the hole.
Setting the tent up.
It was neat meeting Gil and walking his dog, Rocky, while he and my parents and sister were talking. We went to Hardee’s with Gil and Dakota and I had a soft serve ice cream cone.
I enjoyed talking to Vernon and hearing his travels on his bike. We found out that Tom was from Indiana as well. Helping to keep the fire going.
Playing Fact or Crap with Jeff, and having breakfast and dinner with him. Our family also watched the sunset while he was finishing dinner. We were getting stung by little jellyfish (besides my Mom).
Playing the didgeridoo at Dane’s place. Interviewing Dane was fun. He played the ukulele.
Getting to see my Aunt Sharon and Uncle Ed again before they went to visit some family.
Staying at their condo for a few days.
Q & A: We Are Over Halfway…
Q: Has it been as hard as you’d thought it would be?
A: The first couple weeks weren’t the most difficult, but they were hard. The worst has been Texas, especially Austin. The hills got hard there. It has been hard, but I was expecting it to be harder, because people made it sound so hard.
Q: What has been the hardest part so far?
A: The hills. They have been nastily disturbing. A couple times I’ve been trying to sleep, and they’ve crashed the party.
Q: What has been the best part?
A: The kindness and hospitality of the people we’ve met.
Q: What is your favorite memory (memories)?
A: Meeting Pastor Jon. I liked how kind he was, and his personality. I also liked that he gave me a pocket knife, and steel wool to keep it from rusting. It was very kind of him to sit down and show me the right way to sharpen my knives. He was one of my favorite people. Another favorite memory was meeting Mr. Corey. He had a funny personality, and he took me out squirrel hunting. I got to shoot my first shotgun. J My dad, sister and I got to take a ride in the bucket of his tractor. Then he taught me how to drive it, and I got to take it around his five acre’s. My last favorite memory, is of Mr. Roy. He had very funny stories about the Bayou in Louisiana, and all the animals found there. We went to take a picture with his wife at the diner, and she said that he wanted to give me something. She handed me a pouch with a knife in there….and a watch, face mask, etc. He was a really cool guy. Those are my favorite memories.
Q: What is the first place would you go back and visit? Why?
A: Pearlington, MS. That is where Pastor Jon and his family lives.
Q: What is the most beautiful thing that you have seen to this point?
A: It is a close tie between the beautiful bobcat (it was dead on the side of the road, but still had pretty markings), the stingrays we saw in Alabama, or the jelly fish we saw in Santa Rosa Beach, FL.
Q: Has there been any point where you wanted to quit?
A: Yes. Just a little, though. Mainly because some days my legs hurt pretty bad.
Q: What has been the biggest surprise to this point?
A: I was really expecting to see an alligator in Florida, and Alabama, and Mississippi, and Louisiana….but we didn’t see ANY!!! 🙁 Another surprise, was that I tolerated sleeping on the side of I-10, on really pointy, rocky ground.
Q: What has been your favorite meal?
A: It is a close tie between eating alligator and catfish for the first time. I ate alligator in Eunice, LA, and I had catfish in Livingston, LA.
