The Family Adventure Card that We Designed

The Family Adventure Card that We Designed

This is us. Our family. Rob, Gail, Dakota and Luke (we also have a wonderful daughter at college…Hi Kyle!).

We are just your average, every day Hoosiers. A family of bungee jumping, skydiving, adventure seeking, entrepreneurial minded, homeschooling-creatives. That’s all.

Oh, and we’re just like you.

Really.

So the question is…

Will they make it across the country

on their bikes?

As in, bicycles?

The Players

Rob – 42 – Husband, Dad, proudly served in the U.S. Army Reserves, truck driver, real estate investor (and a few things in-between), home school Dad, carrier of wife’s kiln down the basement stairs by himself.

Gail – 29 and holding – Wife, Mother, artist in several mediums, taught pottery out of basement (had husband carry kiln to the basement), home school Mom.

Dakota – 15 going on 29 – Daughter, sister, over 2,000 books read, has played piano for 11 years (thanks Mr. Hansen!), has sang with adult worship team since the age of 13, beat Seymour at chess (yes, girls can play chess), enjoys teaching children and her parents, home schooled since pre-school.

Luke – 8 – Son, brother, little man, has read over 300 books, has learned sometimes it may be better to let older kids beat him at chess, likes all things Star Wars, Macguyver, got his first pocket knife from Grandpa and it hasn’t been out of his reach since, can make the whole family laugh, inventor (no, really).

Okay, we aren’t bicyclists but we do have a good cause.

If we can inspire even one person, one family, to get out there and live while living can be had, we’ve been successful.

UPDATE!

We made it – we finished. Currently we are enjoying our time in San Diego. We are seeking our next adventure – and actually have some planned.

Come join us on our latest adventures!

The Four the Road Family,
Rob, Gail, Dakota, Luke

  1. Wow, What a pleasure to meet you folks! Following your heart and letting nothing stop you from your dream. Enjoy the journey!

    • Norleen,

It’s a pleasure to meet you, too! Thanks for stopping by and spreading a warm smile upon us.

May the tailwinds be at your back,

      The Four The Road Family,
      Rob, Gail, Dakota and Luke

  2. Hi, Sounds like a great trip! What is your planned route? If you are coming through Champaign, Illinois, there will be people eager to host you!

    • Tom,
Thank you so much for your kind and generous offer, we are touched!

Unfortunately, this trip we will not be passing through Champaign, Illinois. We are planning on leaving from Jacksonville, Florida and following the very Southern route of the US to San Diego. We have been tossing around another option of leaving from Savannah, Georgia instead. Much depends on the roads and weather.

In the very near future we will post a map of the route that we’re taking. Since we are not traveling with a ‘company’ we will most likely edit the route as we go.
Sometimes you have to take the path less traveled and slow down to enjoy the roses, not just point at the blur as you rush by!

May the tailwinds be at your back,

      The Four The Road Family,
      Rob, Gail, Dakota and Luke

    • Hey Jess,

Thanks for visiting our site. We are definitely planning on taking advantage of the wonderful hospitality at Warm Showers (our daughter Dakota came across that organization a while back).

An interesting side note on your friends and their blog is that about a year ago, we met a couple on our local bike trail that were also on their honeymoon (hailing from Oregon).
Their cross-country journey was part of the inspiration for us going on our journey, basically, “Why not us?”.

May the tailwinds be at your back*,

      The Four The Road Family,
      Rob, Gail, Dakota and Luke

P.S. We will no longer be signing off “May the tailwinds be at your back”, because our seven year old son pointed out that a tailwind could only be ‘at your back’. He actually prefers “May the wind be at your tail”, but we are still thinking on that one.

  3. I kept vigil for the Occupy Wall Street group as they walked from Wall Street to DC, kept them in my prayers, rejoiced in their achievments. I look forward to keeping you in my prayers and reading of your adventures. I’m excited for you already. If only I were twenty-five years younger!

    • Hey Cheri,

We appreciate having people like you behind us, well-wishing (and praying). Age is just a number but we invite you to live vicariously through our journey (and you can always pedal a few miles with us).

May the winds always be gentle, unless they’re pushing you forward!

      The Four The Road Family,
      Rob, Gail, Dakota and Luke

  4. Hi,
I read your piece in the Times this morning and thought I would check out your blog and wish you all the best on your adventure across the southern States. I will be checking your blog to follow your trip with interest.

    David.

    • Hey David,

Thanks my friend, your support is much appreciated. We, also will be following our trip with great interest :).

May the winds always be gentle, unless they’re pushing you forward!

      The Four The Road Family,
      Rob, Gail, Dakota and Luke

  5. Rob, Gail, Dakota & Luke,

We at Every Child Ministries’ read the piece in The Times and WOW! We are excited for all of you for the adventures you will have! The journey will be amazing and we’ll keep you in prayer as we remember you. May God’s hand be over all of you to keep you safe, and may you meet wonderful people along the way that will become lifelong friends!

Monica Miles (for all of us at Every Child Ministries)

    • Hey Monica (and all of you at Every Child Ministries),

We covet your prayers and kind words. We are definitely looking forward to the new friends that we may not have met if it weren’t for our trip.

      Keep up the great work!

May the winds always be gentle, unless they’re pushing you forward!

      The Four The Road Family,
      Rob, Gail, Dakota and Luke

  6. I just wanted to say, God bless you and your family!

We as homeschoolers are really saddened by the outpouring of nonsense from the ignorant people who speak ill of homeschooling. What a shame.

I pray for Godly people to cross your paths on your wondrous journey. Continually seek the Lord’s face throughout your travels and watch in wonderment for all the beauty the Lord will put before you each moment of your trek. There will be many, many learning opportunities along the way. One thing you can take along with you would be one of those micro recorders and have your kids document what they did each day in their own words. When you reach a desired destination, let them write on the blog telling everyone what they did and what they’ve learned!

We plead the blood of Jesus over you and your family on your journey! God bless you!!

    • Hey Dana,

There will always be detractors. There will also always be people like you. Thank you for your kind words of encouragement.

Great idea about the recorder! The children are each going to have their own page on the site.
Luke was working on his video skills earlier. The perspective of a seven year old boy should be interesting.
      Thanks again.

May the winds always be gentle, unless they’re pushing you forward!

      The Four The Road Family,
      Rob, Gail, Dakota and Luke

    • Hey Gail,

Thank you for the kind words. We look forward to sharing our experiences as we travel.

May the winds always be gentle, unless they’re pushing you forward!

      The Four The Road Family,
      Rob, Gail, Dakota and Luke

  7. I hope you have fun, but I am equally as hopeful that you will not forget those of whom you are leaving behind. They will miss you very much in the land of corn that is Indiana.

    • Hey Mike,

We could never forget you man!

Your sense of humor and kindheartedness stand far above the stalks.

May the winds always be gentle, unless they’re pushing you forward!

      The Four The Road Family,
      Rob, Gail, Dakota and Luke

  8. Did you leave today? If so, I wish you well on the first leg of your journey. Your “pear” tablecloth is on one of our library lounge tables. So you will always be on my mind.
    Best wishes!
    Sheila

    • Hey Sheila,

We are leaving Thursday morning, always another detail to attend to. Actually that is ‘your’ “pear” tablecloth :)!

We are so glad to have met you (a fellow Dylan fan). We look forward to keeping in touch.

May the winds always be gentle, unless they’re pushing you forward!

      The Four The Road Family,
      Rob, Gail, Dakota and Luke

  9. Hope that your plans are all coming together. Wanda and I admire each of you for having the courage to pursue one of your dreams.

    Good luck and Godspeed.

    Tom and Wanda

    • Hey Tom and Wanda,

We appreciate your kind words of encouragement!

It took us a little longer to actually leave but, ALAS, we did. Currently we are sitting about 3 hours from Jacksonville, Florida. We are holed-up in a little town in Georgia named Metter, visiting with an awesome family. Our first day pedaling should be Tuesday.

May the winds always be gentle, unless they’re pushing you forward!

      The Four The Road Family,
      Rob, Gail, Dakota and Luke

  10. Dear Adelphias,

This is the other Gail, Luke’s friend from Family Video! Your mom was in the store last night and told me about your upcoming trip. I was sad to hear that I won’t be seeing your friendly faces for a long time, but I am so excited for you guys! I was also excited when your mom mentioned that I could follow your journey on this website, so I mentioned it to my Luke who insisted we check it out. It’s funny that you guys are starting in Jacksonville, Florida because I lived there when I was a little girl! It seems we just keep having more and more in common! So if I don’t see you before you leave, I will keep in touch with you here and you will all be in my prayers. Have a great adventure and be careful!

    Sincerely,
    Gail L.

    • Hey Gail,

What a way to bring a big smile to our son Luke’s face! He was beaming ear to ear knowing that his ‘other’ Gail would be checking our progress. We may have to borrow your Luke for awhile and use a little of his ‘high-powered’ energy to pedal up some hills.

As a side note, we realize that there are many wonderful people across this great land. You are definitely one of them. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers, and we look forward to keeping in touch now and later.

May the winds always be gentle, unless they’re pushing you forward!

      The Four The Road Family,
      Rob, Gail, Dakota and Luke

  11. What a lovely day to leave! I celebrated the gorgeous weather by walking around Knickerbocker Drive during my lunch break. How exciting–your adventure is beginning!

    Sheila

    • And all the people said, “Amen!”

Would you believe, Sheila, that it took us another day and 1/2 to actually pry ourselves away from Hammond!?

“May your heart always be joyful. May your song always be sung.” ~ From Bob Dylan (and us) to you Sheila

May the winds always be gentle, unless they’re pushing you forward!

      The Four The Road Family,
      Rob, Gail, Dakota and Luke

  12. How exciting!! =) I knew you guys would make this happen! =) And this was even more creative than I first imagined with the idea of cycling across the country. Sounds like the go date is today or this week sometime, so best of luck and have an amazing time. =)

    • Thanks Sam,

Clearly you have some excitement going on also! A big congratulations from us to you, from our family to yours.

Maybe one day we’ll make it up to Canada (after you are there).

May the winds always be gentle, unless they’re pushing you forward!

      The Four The Road Family,
      Rob, Gail, Dakota and Luke

  13. Glad you are on the road. May God’s sweet love be with you in every way. We’re excited for you, and will wait anxiously for your messages. Love Mom

    • Hello Mother…

Thanks for all the support, after all, if it wasn’t for you this adventure would not be happening. 🙂

We’re glad that you are doing well (post surgery). Every day is a beautiful day to be treasured.

      Love,

      Rob, Gail, Dakota and Luke.

    • Hey Jess,

We can see your smiling face in the words, and we like it! Thanks for touching base.

      We love you!

May the winds always be gentle, unless they’re pushing you forward!

      The Four The Road Family,
      Rob, Gail, Dakota and Luke

  14. Dearest Family,

I have told everybody who’d listen about y’alls trip. I hope to see y’all on the t.v. so others can smile and be inspired!!! I LOVE YOU GUYS WITH ALL MY HEART!! Muah!!!

    • Muah Lyle (back at ya),

We had a most wonderful time in that little slice of God’s country, known as Metter, Georgia. The scenery was only surpassed by the company. Our hope is that struggles are few, but joys, many.

All of us are already looking forward to visiting again when we get back. Until then, hold down the fort for us.

May the winds always be gentle, unless they’re pushing you forward!

      Love,

      Rob, Gail, Dakota and Luke

  15. Good luck on your ride. I’m interested in how it goes, especially with the homeschooling as you move across the country. During summers, I tour the country on my bike while teaching online courses from my iPad.

    • Hey Richard,

Thanks for stopping by. It is amazing how many interesting (and amazing) folks you meet along the way.

As far as homeschooling, what better method of learning is there besides experiential?

By the way, what subject do you teach? We may be interested.

May the winds always be gentle, unless they’re pushing you forward!

      The Four The Road Family,
      Rob, Gail, Dakota and Luke

  16. HI, I wish you were coming through central Alabama. We just hosted our first warm showers guest last night and would like to have more. Good luck on your trip of a lifetime!

    • Hey David,

What an awesome community warm showers is, huh? It’s people like yourself that make it that way. Who knows we may end up meeting somewhere along the road sometime.

May the winds always be gentle, unless they’re pushing you forward!

      The Four The Road Family,
      Rob, Gail, Dakota and Luke

    • Hey Ed,
We will be on US-90 all the way through the Panhandle. We will be going right through Pensacola, and we are hoping you will be home and we can stop for a visit!

May the winds always be gentle, unless they’re pushing you forward!

      The Four The Road Family,
      Rob, Gail, Dakota and Luke

      • Looking forward to your visit. I messaged address to Dakota via FB. We have a Keys trip scheduled departing on the 24th but will ensure you have access to the condo & facilities.

        • Hey Ed,

Thank you so much! I just talked with Sharon a few minutes ago. We will be in touch on Sunday! Looking forward to seeing ya’ll soon. 🙂

Thanks for keeping up with us!

          We love you both,
          Rob, Gail, Dakota and Luke

P.S. We aren’t blaming the trip on you, but Rob has mentioned the 3 years of sailing often. 😉

  17. Hope you are all having a great time and benefitting from a tail wind. You chose a great time to be in the warmth of the south and are hopefully able to see some awesome sights. Just wanted to wish you well and reiterate that we do and will continue to miss you all. Love ya’s

    • Hey Brother, Uncle, Aunt, Cousin (Charlotte Rose),

Thank you for the warm thoughts.

We were expecting warm but it’s downright hot, but that’s all part of the adventure. The scenery is ever-changing and with each new day, new beauty unfolds, even with sunburn, climbing hills, and bike maintenance we plod forward.

Thanks for checking in, it means a lot.

We love you and the gals,
      Rob, Gail, Dakota and Luke

  18. Four lovely people just left Lee library. We wish you good weather, smooth riding, and safe travel. This is a wonderful adventure you have embarked on. More people should have the desire and courage to do their hearts wishes. God bless and good winds.

    Josia

    • Hello Josia,

We met two lovely people at the library! Thanks for your encouragement, and meaningful words. We hope our trip will inspire others.

May the winds always be gentle, unless they’re pushing you forward!

      The Four The Road Family,
      Rob, Gail, Dakota and Luke

  19. Hey guys! Holy cow you’ve gone quite a ways! It seems like you just left here(Metter) a few weeks ago and you’re already clearing Texas?! Outstanding. I miss you all and hope you find a way to go downhill both ways through those mountains. Since that is unlikely hopefully those legs are well conditioned and the conditions are well. Love you all!

    • Hey Brother,

We just left there yesterday, didn’t we? We have braved the winds, hills, and goat head thorns of Texas, our minds are ready whether our legs are or not. We miss and love you (and yours)!

    • I’m glad it arrived safely! We are now in Arizona, with about 500 miles left to our journey. 🙂
I hope that technical services is still running smoothly, and someone else picked up the tattle taping for Carol!

      Miss you all!
      ~Dakota

  20. Saw you biking up towards Gates Pass yesterday. That’s a tough ride in the wind! hope you enjoyed the view! travel safely! you’re almost there!

    • Hey Debb,
It was so worth the view!
That was some of the hardest climbing we’ve done over such a short distance, but we made it!
To the Coast…Wherever that may be for you!
      The Adelphia’s

  21. WOW..you guys are CRAZY!!!!! LOL. But, if ANY family was or COULD do something like this..it’d be you all!!! Congrats on your safe arrival to the west coast. Enjoy the weather..and if you all ever make it back up here…I bought Sammy a BIGGER racetrack..and I need SOMEONE to figure out how to put it together..>LOL.
    Evan & Gwen!!!

    • Hey Evan & Gwen,
Thanks! I’m glad you stopped by. Is this the first time?
We are really enjoying the weather, albeit a bit chilly. It is awesome when compared to the freezing temps of the Midwest. No snow is a GREAT thing, at least for me! Just yesterday Luke said “I really love California.” Rob isn’t in a hurry to head back. So, we are trying to make that work, at least for a ‘bit’. 🙂
I’m pretty sure I could get that monster racetrack put together for you in no time at all! 😉
When we get back say in a month or two (or ten)…we’ll have to actually get together, forget the planning, just be there!
      Until Then,
      The Adelphia’s
P.S. Hey – are you missing the 4 wheel drive? 🙂

  22. It was amazing chatting with you guys on the boardwalk in Mission Beach! You guys are remarkable. Keep up the adventures and God Bless!
    -Alex and Erin

    • Hey Alex,

We meet the most remarkable folks when we are out and about! It was a pleasure talking with you and Erin. Enjoy your multi-country upcoming tour!

      The Adelphia Family

  23. Rob and Gail,

It was a real pleasure meeting you and your family. Your children reflect the same maturity and good manners that I’ve often observed as the product of home schooling.

Great job on such a long journey, but don’t forget to sketch a hang glider into your “Daring to Live a Life of Adventure” logo. You’re now a family of land, sea, … and air. : )

    Best wishes,
    Bob Kuczewski

    • Hey Bob,

The pleasure has been ours. Thanks for your encouragement on our hang gliding beginnings. We had a class with John yesterday. We are getting closer to launching…

      See you at the Pines!

      The Adelphia Family

  24. You guys rock! Seriously!!
Love that your son corrected the tailwind line…HA!
    Keep on getting the good!
    Adam 😀

  25. What a neat family you all are. Last Wednesday when you were here at the visitors’ center, I and other rangers really enjoyed hearing about your adventures We were all in agreement that you, Dakota and Luke, were very lucky to have such adventurous parents. Gail, I have a feeling that you play a very big role in keeping the ‘crew’ headed in the right direction. Rob, I told my husband about your commenting about wanting to talk about flying with him. He just grinned but agreed that you are all having experiences that few families ever have together. So I hope that you all continue to have great fun with your travels. I will continue to check in….

    • Hey M.G.!
It was a pleasure to meet such a warm and friendly group of gals. We enjoyed the conversation as well as the education we had.
Look forward to stopping in again and sharing more of the same.

Do keep checking in. You never know what we have in store.

      The Adelphia Family

  26. Hey Guys,

Just wanted to say hi and I hope you enjoyed the hike.
I was the one you talked to on top of Mt. Humphrey yesterday.

    Keep the Adventure going.

    • Hey Rob,

Nice name :)! It was nice meeting you at the top the other day. Awesome views, great people and cool…no frigid breezes! It doesn’t get any better.
Our gatorade had ice pieces in it. 🙂 That wind was brutal to say the least. The hike and knocking one more thing off the list was well worth the couple to few hours of wind and cold.

To the Peak, what ever that may be for you!
      Rob, Gail, Dakota and Luke

  27. It was nice to meet with you all. Good luck. Stop by at my Gas station next time you travel to Arizona I-8 Hwy exit 151.
